A self-taught artist

Last updated on

A few months ago I came across a painting that I liked very much. In fact, it has been my mobile phone’s wallpaper since then. It’s by Karla Gerard, an abstract and folk self-taught artist who lives in Waterville, Maine.

Karla has been painting since she was a teenager and has a lot of passion for art.

She went professional 10 years ago. She sells her original paintings, pillow covers, prints and more.

Karla enjoys painting black birds, black cats, deer, moose, raccoon which is clearly seen in her art prints.

“I was always interested in doing crafts, always creating and making things since my youth… making shoe box houses with toothpick furniture, building tree houses as a child… calligraphy work on certificates. I always had craft/art projects going on, sewing my own clothes in the 70s… painting on wood items in the 80’s, quilting, and…

Here are some of her works:

You can see more of her works on this page and learn more about her by reading this interview.

What do you think of Karla Gerard and her works?

a traditional skill of making things by hand, for example furniture or jewellery

pillow cover (= pillow case)

toothpick furniture

sewing /ˈsəʊɪŋ/

quilting /ˈkwɪltɪŋ/

If you like crafts, you are interested ....... crafts.

You are interested in crafts.

If your jacket button falls off, what will you do?

You'll sew it on.

Where is the stress in the word 'interested'?

On the first syllable: /ˈɪntrəstɪd/
